About Me
Autobiography
My yoga teacher always says, “You are not your body. You are not your soul.”
By that time we’re usually sitting eyes closed and cross-legged on our yoga mats with a cork yoga
block under our bum. In awe and unison we respond affirmatively by doing absolutely nothing. Breathing
in and out and avoiding shifting uncomfortably in our seats, we keep listening in an attempt to one day
reach the state of wisdom that this statement demands. Until that is achieved, however, I have no choice
but to believe her. Just as I do when she says “you can do it” on my tenth try to jump up into
handstand, I believe her when she tells me that I am not my body and not my soul.
Still, occasionally, just occasionally, I can’t help but squint through my left eye, trying to look
around and figure out whether anyone else is, too, asking themselves: if I am not my body, and not my
soul, then what the hell am I?
Though I will probably never be able to answer this question with mantric grace, I feel I got a
tiny step closer to understanding the meaning while building this page. I thought an about page needed a
list of my accomplishments, publications, and inspiring experiences. But whatever I listed, however long
the list got, it always fell short of representing who I really am. That’s when I realized maybe I am
not my job, and maybe I am not my past.
Eventually, I decided to scratch it all and leave you with some creative pieces and games instead,
for I
believe, or hope, they will bring you more joy than scrolling through endless bullets about how greatly
I managed, steered, navigated, and did a bunch of other super fancy-sounding things.
For everyone seeking clarity on my professional proficiency, I gladly leave you with this
one-sentence summary: I am capable of a lot of things, interested in some, willing to work for a few.
Love,
Jenn
